'Bondi Caveman' charged with sexual assault

A Sydney homeless man colloquially known as the Bondi Caveman will face court today after being charged with sexually assaulting a Sydney woman last night.

The man was taken to Waverley police station after allegedly sexually assaulting a woman along a walking track at the northern end of Bondi Beach.

He has become a Bondi icon after a long-running stoush with the local council who have tried to evict him from the cliff-ledge he calls his home.

But a removal order in March 2007 sparked a public outcry that led to international media coverage, with hundreds signing a petition pushing Waverley Council to let him stay.

The 54-year-old was arrested at around 10pm last night after the woman called police to report the alleged crime.

He is charged with sexual assault, resisting arrest and assaulting police.
