A woman is planning to sue a childcare centre that allegedly allowed her 16-month-old son to be sunburned so severely he had to be taken to hospital.

Michelle Murton picked up her toddler son Ozzy Buisson from Jumping Beans Children's Community Child Care two weeks ago to find him "as red as a beetroot", the Courier Mail reported.

The severe sunburn then developed weeping blisters the next morning, according to Ms Murton, who took him to Kingaroy Hospital 200km north-west of Brisbane.

"He was so red it was almost purple. For him to be burnt this bad, he must have been outside in the sun most of the day," she said.

When she asked her son's centre group leader about the burns, Ms Murton was told Ozzy's sunscreen would have washed off when he was playing in water.

Jumping Beans owner Bevan Pearson said all children were wearing sunscreen and hats and had their mealtimes in the shade.

"All the children played in the water and of 39 children on the day he (Ozzy) was the only one who had sunburn," he said.

Mr Pearson said he was sympathetic and apologetic over the incident but did not believe the centre was responsible.
